The client’s Brief asked for a new large open-plan kitchen, dining, sitting area; to remove the internal drop in levels; and provide a new external terrace for entertaining. The design vision was to provide a simple pavilion structure with glazing that could be opened to two sides overlooking a new stone patio with steps down to the garden.
The roof cantilevers out to form a canopy to provide shading and reduce overheating in the summer. To maintain an elegant form the edge of this new roof is kept as thin as possible and required careful detailing and co-ordination with the structural engineer. Accoya timber cladding was then fixed to the exterior by skilled carpenters on site. Internally, brick slips are applied to the long kitchen wall and an oak herringbone timber floor unifies the space. A skylight above provides daylight into the deeper part of the new area.
